Compliance monitoring involves routine inspections of a site to conduct sampling or direct measurement of prescribed parameters. For example, compliance monitoring may include measurements of the groundwater depth, taking samples and performing laboratory analysis.

Compliance monitoring is usually prescribed by consent authorities when discharge is anticipated or proposed into the surrounding environment. Compliance monitoring is often imposed in the form of development or License conditions.
